HONOLULU — Police on Kauai say a 60-year-old man was bit by a shark Wednesday at a surfing spot on the island’s west side.

A spokeswoman for the Kauai Police Department did not know the name of a man, who was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle with injuries to his left foot.

The shark was estimated to be about 10 feet long.

Shark warning signs were posted on a roughly half-mile stretch of the beach by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The department, in a news release, says officers will assess the beach Thursday for any shark sighting and remove the signs that day if nothing is seen.

The department says this is the third reported shark incident on Kauai since July 30.
