New Jersey man drowns north of Flagler Beach

A New Jersey man was swept out to sea and drowned just north of Flagler Beach this afternoon, sheriff’s officials said.

James Palmer, 55, was visiting the beach with his wife, daughter and son when he went into the rough post-Hurricane Irene surf about 2:40 p.m., Flagler County sheriff’s spokeswoman Debra Johnson said in a news release.

His family lost sight of him, but about 10 minutes later a surfer spotted Palmer’s body floating in the water and pulled him to shore, Johnson said.

Palmer’s wife administered CPR before he was transported to Florida Hospital Flagler, where he was pronounced dead.
