Hawaii surfer attacked by Great White
SOUTH BEACH, Oregon (HawaiiNewsNow) – Bobby Gumm is lucky to be alive. That is an understatement when you look at his surf board.
Thursday afternoon Bobby was sitting on his board, about 600 feet from shore at a location known as South Beach in Oregon when the Oahu native felt his board explode.
Gumm said a great white shark estimated to be around 16 feet long bit into his board. Gumm was only five inches from the spot where the Great white crunched down.
Gumm who now lives in Oregon says it took him 10 minutes to paddle to shore, not knowing if the shark would return. Gumm’s wife says he is in shock and is currently talking to shark experts.
Bobby is chef at the Bay-839 Restaurant in Newport, Oregon. The restaurant now plans to permanently display the surfboard.
