Miami teen recused from Hawaii surf recovering

HONOLULU (AP) — A Florida teen rescued when he was swept out to sea in Hawaii says he’s lucky to be alive.

It’s been about week since a tour guide jumped into dangerous surf off the Big Island to pull Miami 15-year-old Matthew Alzate to safety.

Matthew is recovering in a Honolulu hospital where he was flown to but another 15 year old from White Plains, N.Y. who was also swept away remains missing. Rescuers have called off the search for Tyler Madoff.

The teens were part of an adventure tour group’s kayaking expedition when they were hiking July 4 near the Captain Cook monument. While resting at a tide pool, large waves swept them into the ocean.

On Wednesday Matthew reunited with Nolan Reed, the guide credited with saving his life.
