Labor Day weekend is all about Quiksilver in Long Beach
While the competition didn’t officially start on Monday, thousands of surf fans, visitors and residents gathered in Long Beach to watch the world’s best surfers take to the waves for the first time during the Pro Expression Session at the Quiksilver Pro N.Y. on Labor Day.
Surfers were given a traditional Hawaiian welcome at the official opening ceremony before taking to the waves to demonstrate their skills in an hour-long contest, where they produced an exciting afternoon of high performance maneuvers, keeping crowds glued to the action.
Thousands of visitors came to Long Beach for the Labor Day weekend — Quiksilver estimates the crowd to be 40,000 strong. The boardwalk and local restaurants — from Sorrento’s on West Park Ave. to the Allegria Hotel — were bustling with patrons on a busy holiday, and throughout the weekend, Quiksilver’s presence was palpable.
The company’s sprawling merchandise tent attracted hordes of customers, with lines extending onto the beach. Roxy, Quiksilver’s line of women’s apparel, was in full swing with its “Beach House” activities on Monday, which included an interactive photobooth, custom eyewear and makeup projects, free daily surf camp sessions with Roxy athletes and Skudin Surf, free music, free yoga sessions, Djs and more.
Local pro surfer Balaram Stack, along with pros Fred Patacchia and Jeremy Flores, were also on hand signing autographs.
Surfline, the official forecasters for the Quiksilver Pro New York, are calling for Hurricane Katia…
