Santa Cruz County tweaks ban on plastic bags to exempt restaurants

The county board on Tuesday voted to scale back its upcoming countywide plastic bag ban, handing restaurants an exemption under the law.

The vote was in response to a suit challenging the new law, which was approved last year and is slated to go into effect March 20. The suit was filed by San Francisco-based Save the Plastic Bag Coalition, which has challenged similar ordinances across California.

County supervisors said the change was needed to move forward with the ban, which local environmentalists sought in part to keep plastic bags from drifting into Monterey Bay and harming marine life.

“We’re doing this strategically, so that the single use bag ordinance will go into effect in late March,” Supervisor Mark Stone said.

On Monday, a Washington, D.C.-based pro-plastics group called the American Progressive Bag Alliance blasted plastic bag ordinances…
