Actor Gerard Butler rescued at Mavericks while shooting surf film

Actor Gerard Butler, star of “Of Men and Mavericks,” had to be rescued at Mavericks while filming a scene at the famed big-wave surfing spot.

Butler, 42, was pulled underwater and swept over a rocky reef while he was leashed to his surfboard, according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News.

A water-safety person on a personal water craft picked Butler up.

Waves in the 15-foot range rolled in at the treacherous break near Half Moon Bay, but it was a much larger set that broke in front of Butler and surfers Greg Long, Zach Wormhoudt and Peter Mel and pulled them under, according to the report.

Butler was taken to Stanford Medical Center for observation but was later released.

Wormhoudt, a Santa Cruz surfer who has been riding the huge winter waves at Mavericks for about 20 years, said they were worked over by the wave that pulled them down.

“It was probably the biggest set of the day,” he said…
