Reported Shark Sighting in La Jolla

The shark sighting in La Jolla is the third reported sighting in San Diego in one week.

Another shark sighting was reported in San Diego County on Wednesday afternoon. A group of five surfers reportedly spotted the 12-inch dorsal fin of a shark south of Casa Reef in La Jolla at approximately 1:30 p.m., according to San Diego Lifeguard Services.

Maurice Luque, a spokeman for San Diego Fire-Rescue, a police helicopter was sent out to search for the shark from above, but nothing was found.

City lifeguards closed a two-mile stretch of beach, one mile south and one mile north of the sighting from Hospital Point to Emerald Cove. The beaches will be closed for the rest of the day.

This is the third shark sighting in a week in San Diego County. On Thursday, a lifeguard spotted the 18-inch dorsal fin of a shark in the surfline near Belmont Park in Mission Beach. A day later, a second sighting was reported in Mission Beach. An experienced surfer reported a shark sighting that was most likely a great white shark, according to shark expert Dr. A. Peter “Pete” Klimley, with UC Davis.
