KHASAN, Russia — A shark chewed off the arm of a Russian swimmer in an extremely rare attack in the waters off its Far Eastern coast, news agency Interfax reported Wednesday.
“The 25 year old was admitted in critical condition, unconscious. His arms were chewed off by his elbow,” the report quoted a medical source as saying in the Khasan district of Primorye region.
The medical source said the man was operated on for an hour and was in intensive care. His arms were chewed off, as were “other body parts,” the report said, adding that he would survive.
The shark struck about 50 meters off the coast. It was the first registered shark attack in the Primorye region located on the northwest coast of the Sea of Japan, AFP reported.
