Update: Search Continues For Missing Surfer

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Coast Guard, 14th District, issued the following news release:

Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary crews continue to search for a missing surfer in the vicinity of Sunset Beach, Friday.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and a Coast Guard Auxiliary airplane launched at 7 a.m to search. An aircrew piloting an HC-130 Hercules airplane joined the search at 10 a.m. The crew aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Ahi searched throughout Thursday night and continues to search. The search has covered approximately 2,161 miles.

Coast Guard crews have searched from Kaena Point to Kahuku. The Hercules aircrew searched from Haleiwa extending 41 miles northeast along the coast and 39 miles offshore.

The Honolulu Fire Department is also assisting in the search with the use of a rescue boat, their Air One helicopter, a jet ski and shoreline personnel.

Robert Rumburg, from Arvada, Colorado, is 51 years old, was reported to be six-foot-two, wearing black shorts and in excellent health with no medical issues.

Watchstanders in Sector Honolulu received initial notification at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday from a local resident, reporting a missing surfer in the vicinity of Sunset Beach. Rumburg’s surfboard was located in the vicinity of Rocky Point…
