Little Compton Fire Officials got a report of a missing male surfer a little before 6 p.m. on Saturday. Around 7:10 p.m., Chief Richard Petrin reported he made it back to shore safely on his own.

A name and residence for the surfer were not available.

Getting a report of a missing male surfer near West Island, which is offshore from the Sakonnet Lighthouse, Petrin said they had a boat in the water ready to look for the surfer. The U.S. Coast Guard was called to assist, but never made it, Petrin added.

“He got in on his own,” Petrin said.
