Shark sighting closes waters off Makena

MAKENA — Lifeguards closed waters off Makena State Park after a shark sighting at 11 a.m. Tuesday, said Deborah Ward, spokeswoman for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

A lifeguard saw a 10- to 12-foot shark about 10 to 15 yards offshore as he was entering the water, she said. Signs were posted, and state enforcement officers were helping county lifeguards patrol the beach and warn beachgoers not to enter the water.

The beach was closed a mile and either direction of the shark sighting — from Maluaka Beach to the northern boundary of the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve. Two lifeguards monitored nearshore waters on personal watercrafts…
