Memorial paddleout for famed surfboard shaper rescheduled to Sept. 17

September 2, 2011 | 4:12 p.m.

A memorial paddleout for Newport Beach surfboard crafter Robert Russell Brown, 63, has been moved to Sept. 17.

Those who wish to remember Brown are asked to attend the memorial and paddleout at the Newport Pier at 8 a.m., according to Russell Surfboards employee JP Roberts.

Accommodations will be made for those who don’t surf but wish to participate by standing on the pier, Roberts said.

“We just want everybody to grab the raddest Russell surfboard they own and come help celebrate the life of the iconic boardmaker we all love,” Roberts said in an email.

Brown died Aug. 21. He opened his surf shop on the Balboa Peninsula in 1967.
