Surfer honoured in a paddle out at Kirra

Some of Australia’s top surfers will pay tribute to Michael Peterson on Saturday when they join a a traditional “paddle out” to farewell the King of Kirra.

World champions Rabbit Bartholomew and Mick Fanning, along with Peterson’s younger brother Tommy, will address the crowd before surfers paddle out off Kirra Point to form a circle of boards in his honour.

Peterson, known as MP, died suddenly after a suspected heart attack on March 29 at the home he shared with his mother Joan at Tweed Heads.

The 59-year-old’s funeral was held on April 5, a day before Fanning defeated Kelly Slater to win his second Rip Curl Pro title at Bells Beach.

MP, described by Slater as a legend of the sport, dominated Bells Beach in his heyday winning the event in 1973, 1974 and 1975.

A minute’s applause before last week’s final brought Fanning to tears before he took on Slater.
