My Totally Hot Car: 1946 Mercury woodie
Published: Aug. 6, 2011 Updated: Aug. 7, 2011 7:57 a.m.
For many car guys, delight arrives when they can finally park the cars they lusted for in their youth in their garage decades later. That was certainly the case with Steve Blagg of San Clemente. His dream machine was not a hot-rod or a muscle car, but a woodie.
That’s why this 1946 Mercury woodie wagon he now owns brings him so much satisfaction.
“I grew up surfing in O.C.,” says Blagg, 61. “When I was a young kid, I’d see them cruising.”
Those images of surfboard-laden wagons set in motion a desire that would manifest itself many years later.
“We’d hitchhike from La Habra (to the beach)” back in those days, Blagg says, laughing at how safe and simple those times were.
Fast-forward to about four years ago, and Blagg finally got the opportunity to buy his own Mercury woodie, which were rarer than other models.
“I bought this from a guy in Newport Beach with a bunch of cars,” Blagg said. “I pulled over to look at a wagon. He said, ‘Want to buy it?’ I said, ‘I’m looking for a woodie.'”
