NEW SMYRNA BEACH —

Dozens of surfers are expected to take part in a memorial Sunday night to remember a Volusia County teacher, who died while surfing last week.

A “paddle out” memorial will be held in the waters of New Symrna Beach, for Frederick Fernandez.

The 55-year-old New Smyrna Beach High School teacher was surfing in high waves produced by Hurricane Irene, when one slammed him into the ocean floor, killing him.

The ceremony is expected to begin at 5 p.m.
