Owen Wright out of the Australian Open of Surfing

Owen Wright has pulled out of the competition due to illness.

AUSSIE surf champion Owen Wright is out of the Australian Open of Surfing as competitors from across the world line up to hit Manly.

The world No.3 has had to pull out of the competition because of illness, organisers told the Manly Daily.

A total of 144 boardriders will be competing in the open men’s six-star event, with men and women from the US, Brazil, Peru, South Africa, France, Portugal, New Zealand and Australia all competing for their share of the total prize pool of nearly $200,000.

Aussies will lead the charge into the surf with world No.2 Joel Parkinson and world No.4 Taj Burrow the highest ranked surfers.

They will face a foreign onslaught, including twice US Open winner Brett Simpson, South African Jordy Smith, Brazilian Miguel Pupo and Portugal’s Tiago Pires.

Sally Fitzgibbon is the top ranked surfer in the women’s competition.
