ENCINITAS — A surfboard honoring the 343 New York Firefighters who died during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 will be dedicated at a ceremony in Encinitas on Wednesday.
On Sept. 11, 2001, Brennan Savage, current president of the Fire Department of New York Retirees of California, was leaving to go surfing alongside several firefighters when he saw the second plane hit the World Trade Center.
Now an Encinitas resident, Savage donated a surfboard to Iron Cross Surfboards in Cardiff to create a board commemorating the firefighters who lost their lives that day. Some were surfing that morning and then rushed to the World Trade Center.
Jeff and Jay Grygera, of Iron Cross Surfboards, and Jerry Anderson of Headline Graphics, have completed the board, which depicts an American Flag and the faces of the 343 firefighters who died.
