“Birdy” Burdett killed in crash

11th March 2012

A CAR crash on the Kings Highway near Braidwood has claimed the lives of a well known North Coast identity and his two daughters.

Surfer and musician Brian “Birdy” Burdett and his daughters Sky, 10, and Kayla, 8, where killed on Friday afternoon at about 4.30pm when Mr Bird’s westbound Ford Falcon wagon crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided with a Mitsubishi Outlander travelling in the opposite direction.

The four occupants of the other car, including two girls aged 11 and 13, were taken to Canberra Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A 43-year-old man driving a Mitsubishi Outlander was taken to hospital, along with a 39-year-old woman and the girls.

Mr Burdett grew up on the Gold Coast and was living at Lennox Head, before moving to Jindabyne about three years ago. He was well known in music and surfing circles along the Far North Coast.

His song – Let Kirra Be Kirra – became an anthem for the protests against the development of Kirra Point as marina.
