A 40-year-old man apparently drowned in the surf off Daytona Beach this afternoon, a Volusia County Beach Patrol spokeswoman said.

Richard Kerr of St. Petersburg was in the water in an unguarded area, said Capt. Tammy Marris.

Beach Patrol Capt. Rich Gardner said Kerr was trying to teach his children how to surf near the Boylston Avenue beach approach, got caught in the current and was carried north.

Lifeguards spotted him about a quarter of a mile north of Boylston and brought him to shore, but he was unresponsive, Gardner said.
