Surfer drowns at Moffat Beach

A SURFER has drowned at a popular Coast break despite desperate efforts to save him by a group of off-duty lifesavers.

The man, aged in his 50s, was found floating face down in the water off the rocky headland at Caloundra’s Moffat Beach by members of the Maroochy Surf Club who were surfing nearby.

“They were there at the beach and went out for a surf and that’s when they found him,” Surf Life Saving Sunshine Coast duty officer Aaron Purchase said.

“They brought him in to the beach and administered CPR until paramedics arrived.”

The tragedy happened about 1.30pm on a beach that is popular with surfers but not patrolled by lifesavers.

A Department of Emergency Services spokesman said the unidentified man was taken to Caloundra Hospital in a critical condition and was unable to be revived.

Unconfirmed reports last night said the man was surfing alone.

Police obtained the key to his car from his leg rope…
