A husband-and-wife photography team are making a splash with their amazing underwater snaps.
Nick Robertson-Brown and wife Caroline have travelled the world to capture the wonders of the ocean – including everything from sharks to shipwrecks.
The pair, who run underwater photography business Frogfish from a small studio in Didsbury, have been gaining international recognition for their stunning pictures taken off the Cape of Good Hope, the Caribbean and even in Manchester Aquatics Centre.
Nick, 59, and Caroline, 38, have been nominated for a series of awards since giving up their Chorlton-based diving instructor business Orca.
Most recently, Nick’s hair-raising close-up of two black-tip sharks taken off the coast of South Africa was ‘highly commended’ at the National Geographic Photo Award last year.
The snap – taken without the protection of a cage – is called The Krays, because of its resemblance to the famous photo of the gangster twins Ronnie and Reggie Kray, taken by David Bailey in the 1960s.
Dad-of-two Nick said: “We love what we do. It may not be the best paying job but it allows us to travel for three months a year to many wonderful places, and to pursue our passion for nature.
“I do get close to sharks but they are mostly harmless. This year has been a particularly bad year for people dying from shark attacks around the world, but sharks generally don’t think people are very tasty. They will probably only attack you if they think you are a seal or another form of prey.”
Caroline, who has an MA in animal behaviour, added: “We are passionate about shark conservation. Nick has developed a reputation for getting up close and personal with sharks but I have been getting into underwater photography, and have started to get them published too.”
As well as nature photographs, Nick and Caroline have taken numerous photos of shipwrecks – anything from a few weeks to a century old – for photo magazines.
And Nick was commissioned to take an underwater shot of British Paralympians – the swimmer Liz Johnson, marathon runner Richard Whitehead and wheelchair basketball player Simon Munn – during the Paralympic World Cup, held in Manchester earlier this year…
