A University of San Diego law student suffered a severe shark bite this week in Puerto Rico and won’t make it back to campus in time to start classes Monday.
Lydia Strunk, 27, is expected to remain hospitalized at the Rio Piedras Medical Center in San Juan through the weekend, according to an Associated Press report. She was bitten by a shark estimated to be six-feet long and suffered an approximately 10-inch wound, from below her right knee to the ankle, Tuesday night.
“It’s always troubling to hear about an accident involving one of our students,” University of San Diego School of Law Dean Stephen Ferruolo said in a prepared statement through a school spokeswoman.
“We wish Lydia a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming her back to USD School of Law soon.”
Strunk will be allowed to recommence her studies when she is ready, spokeswoman Ashley Vitale said. Strunk — who is a native of Wendell, Idaho — was scheduled to be entering her third year of law school.
Family members, who are in the Caribbean, plan to issue a statement when they return to the mainland late next week, Vitale said.
“Right now, we are taking it one day at a time to help her recover,” Strunk’s mother Patty told the AP in Puerto Rico. “She has a great story to tell.”
Strunk was among a group kayaking in Mosquito Bay on Tuesday night. She was bit after she and four other people jumped into the water, doctors told the AP.
Only seven shark attacks have ever been reported in Puerto Rico, according to the AP, citing statistics provided by the Florida Museum of Natural History.
