UPDATE: Crews continue search for missing surfer on Oahu’s north shore
HONOLULU – Coast Guardsmen continue to search for a missing surfer in the vicinity of Sunset Beach, Thursday.
Coast Guard crews aboard the Cutter Ahi and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter focused their searches along the North Shore off Kuhuku and Kaena Point, out to approximately 20 miles from shore, covering 1,438 square miles.
In addition to the Coast Guard assets, the Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety assisted with the search. The fire department provided their Air One helicopter, a rescue boat and a jet ski. Ocean Safety crews assisted with swimmers and a jet ski.
The Cutter Ahi crew will continue to search throughout the night.
Robert Rumburg, 51 years old, is reported to be six-foot-two, wearing black shorts and in excellent health with no medical issues.
Watchstanders in Sector Honolulu received initial notification at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday from a local resident, reporting a missing surfer in the vicinity of Sunset Beach.
Coast Guard and fire department assets responded and began searching Wednesday night. Coast Guard crews aboard the Ahi and a Dolphin searched throughout the night and all day Thursday.

The Coast Guard and Honolulu Fire Department continue the search for a surfer reported missing in the vicinity of Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore.
Crews are searching for 51-year old Robert Rumburg who is 6 feet 2 inches tall and approximately 160 pounds.
He was reported missing at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
A friend reported that a white surfboard was missing from the house and he had stated he was going surfing before left.
The surfboard was located at Rocky Point near Sunset Beach at around 11:44 p.m.
The Honolulu Fire Department’s Air One helicopter crew began at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, but suspended at midnight.
They resumed their search Thursday morning using Air One and a rescue boat. The fire department is concentrating their search close to the shore.
