American surfer Dusty Payne’s Billabong Pro campaign could be over after he suffered a nasty gash to his leg in training wipeout at Teahupoo.

The world No.20, who won his opening heat of the contest on Saturday to move directly into the third round, had 13 stitches inserted around his right knee after the mishap just before sunset on Thursday (Friday AEST).

‘I thought it was a pretty good wave but the west bowl just kind of caught me and I didn’t make it and just got rag-dolled on the reef a little bit,’ Payne told AAP.

The 22-year-old Hawaiian admitted his contest could be over.

‘It’s up to me … the doctors say I can continue but I just don’t know and will see how I’m feeling,’ he said.
