The world’s richest skateboarding event will take place in Kimberley, making South Africa the first country to host the Maloof Money Cup skateboard competition outside of the United States.

The Maloof Money Cup, the world’s greatest skateboarding event, will take place from September 30 to October 2.

The event will run annually for the next three years featuring pro street and pro vert competitions and will be televised internationally.

Speaking at the 50-day countdown at the Big Hole precinct, Joe Maloof, founder of Maloof skateboarding, said it didn’t take long for him and his partners to decide to let South Africa host the competition, after meeting with Premier Jenkins and her executive council in Las Vegas.

“We discussed the opportunity for Kimberley and they told me they wanted to make this the best event ever and we decided to bring it here,” said Maloof. “It’s an honour to have it in South Africa.”

He said most important was the passion of the people of Kimberley, who wanted to have the event and protect the brand more than other countries.

Premier Hazel Jenkins said the occasion was nostalgic in that 16 months ago Kimberley hosted the 50-day countdown to the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

“However, unlike the soccer World Cup, where we merely hosted the Uruguayan national football team and did not stage any soccer matches, the Maloof Money Cup will be held on our very doorstep.

“It is an international event and countries from across the globe will be afforded both the opportunity and privilege to participate.

“As government collective, we can assure the people of the province and all skateboarding enthusiasts that the Northern Cape is ready and that Kimberley is definitely ready to host this prestigious international skateboarding event.”
