A high-surf advisory was posted for the Marin coast Monday by federal forecasters who warned beach visitors about rogue “sneaker waves.”

Ten-foot combers were predicted for some coastal areas from Santa Cruz to Sonoma, and an occasional “sneaker wave is possible,” federal forecaster Steve Anderson said.

Such big waves suddenly rise from the surf and can sweep beachcombers out to sea, the National Weather Service official noted.

“There’s always a danger of people getting hit by a big wave,” he said.

High surf can be expected through Tuesday as a low pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska moves through the region. No wind or rain is expected.
