VIA – SANTA CRUZ SENTINEL
The Punta Galea Challenge, a big wave surf contest in the Basque region of Spain, has been given a yellow light and is expected to be held Sunday.
The contest is one of four 2013-14 Big Wave World Tour contests, with windows currently open and the first to be given a status change. Others include the Mavericks Invitational, the Dive ‘n Surf at Todos Santos in Baja California and the Seatka Pro in Oregon, formerly known as the Nelscott Reef Invitational. Windows for all four contests run through March 31.
Invitees include Santa Cruz representatives Shawn Dollar, Ken “Skindog” Collins, Zach Wormhoudt and Peter Mel. They will be joined by 20 other invitees, including six from the Basque region.
The right-hand point break offers long carving walls and barrel sections. The currents are some of the strongest in the world and when matched with 30-foot-plus surf, Punta Galea offers a challenging wave, even for the world’s best.
The wave breaks at the bottom of a 60-meter cliff, on the right-hand side of the Abra Bay, opposite Bilbao Commercial Harbor. Easily reached by boat, the spot is located less than three miles away from the Puerto Deportivo of Getxo.
