SANTA CRUZ — Santa Cruz surfer Nat Young has clinched Rookie of the Year on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour, a tour spokesman said Thursday.
Young, 22, also surfed his way to the final at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, but lost to Australian Kai Otton 12.23 to 11.03. Young and Otton lit up overhead rights and lefts at the beach break at Supertubes.
“It feels good but it feels bad at the same time,” Young said in an interview after the final.
“I just wanted to win real bad, but at the end of the day when I look back I’ll be so stoked I got second.”
Young’s finish matched his best result of the year at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in April. In Portugal, he defeated world title contender Jordy Smith, Josh Kerr and Sebastian Zietz on his road to the final.
Nat also was asked about the Rookie of Year win, which tour spokesman Dave Prodan confirmed in an email to the Sentinel.
“It feels awesome,” Young said. “It was a goal of mine since the start of the year. It’s what I worked all year and it feels amazing when you achieve a goal you’ve been focused on. All my career so far has been small stepping stones, so hopefully I can continue building and next year or the year after put myself up there in the top five.”
