A warning for beachgoers after three shark sightings in five days at Pismo Beach

Three shark sightings over the past five days, that is the case at a local hot spot for tourists and surfers. Warning signs are posted at Pismo Beach and that has some people staying on shore.

The signs are not keeping people from visiting Pismo Beach. Many surfers say it will not keep them out of the water, but it is making other people think twice before going in.

The beach is still open and the sand was packed Wednesday afternoon with locals and visitors. The warning signs say Monday but the first sighting was actually on Saturday. Then the Pismo Beach Police Department says there was another one around 2:30p.m. Tuesday. That is when a surfer reported seeing a 10 to 15-foot shark just south of the pier in about eight feet of water, 90 feet offshore.

Sandbar Surf Company tells KSBY News there was another sighting Wednesday in that same area around 11:30 a.m.

“She was kind of freaked out, she had come in real quick and she said she’d seen about an 18-inch dorsal fin out there, so the sharks are definitely around,” said Robert Dyer, a surf instructor for Sandbar Surf Company.
