Shark bites surfer off Melbourne Beach

A 28-year-old surfer bitten by a shark while in the waters off Melbourne Beach was in stable condition, according to Brevard County Fire-Rescue officials.

The attack happened about 7:30 p.m. Thursday as the unidentified surfer was paddling out about 50 feet from shore.

The man told paramedics that something grabbed his hand in the waves, prompting him to pull it back as what appeared to be a five-foot long shark swam away.
