Surfalorus Film Festival: Riding the Waves of Cinematic Brilliance in Outer Banks

Surfalorus celebrates 12 years with Savage Waters, Ministry of Surf and the NC Oyster Trail

The Surfalorus Film Festival, in its 12th iteration and presented by NC Aquariums, returns to Nags Head from September 18-20, 2023. Set against the backdrop of the Eastern Surf Championships at Jennette’s Pier, the festival promises a cinematic journey into the world of surfing, spotlighting both the modern thrills and timeless traditions of the sport.

This year’s lineup offers a deep dive into the oceanic adventures and tales of human perseverance. The festival takes off with a performance by festival director Zach Hanner and showcases the gripping documentary, Savage Waters, by Mikey Corker. This enthralling film trails the brave endeavors of big-wave surfer Andrew Cotton and others, navigating treacherous Atlantic waters.

But it’s not just about the waves. It’s about the people who ride them, and those who capture these moments. A notable highlight features six classic short films by surf legend George Greenough, marking their premiere on American shores. Beyond the films, attendees will embark on an educational exploration of coastal aquaculture, introduced by Tyler Hofe, an acclaimed shellfish farmer from Kinnakeet Oyster Company.

The power of surfing transcends just the thrill; it serves as therapy for many. Ministry of Surf, a poignant documentary, portrays the transformative impact of surfing on children with autism. This film offers an intimate portrayal of Surfers Healing, an initiative that uses the cathartic essence of water and surfing to provide children a sense of joy and liberation.

Closing the festival is the mesmerizing Wade in the Water, a narrative that echoes the resonant history of a millennium-old Pan-African surfing tradition. As the screen dims, attendees are invited to a beachside bonfire, offering a serene space to connect, reminisce, and envision future endeavors.

Zach Hanner, the festival director, encapsulates the event’s essence, stating the 2023 festival could be their best edition, celebrating the rich tapestry of films, the convenience of its alongside hosting with the ESA contest, and its burgeoning, loyal audience.

For enthusiasts yearning to experience this surf cinematic odyssey, tickets are available, with an all-access pass at a mere $25. The festival, presented in collaboration with esteemed institutions like Jennette’s Pier, Cucalorus Film Foundation, and Dare Arts, promises not just films, but moments and stories that linger in the heart and mind. Dive in, and let the waves of Surfalorus take you on an unforgettable journey.
