The rare book “The Surf Riders of Hawaii,” hand-made by A.R. Gurrey Jr. between 1911 and 1915, and believed to be the first book on surfing, is being marketed as “the jewel” of the May 11 auction by The Surfing Heritage & Culture Center in San Clemente, Calif.

The book, made to sell in his art shop in Waikiki in the early 1900s, Gurrey was one of the first photographers to document the sport and opened it to worldwide attention, according to the California center.

Only eight copies are known to exist and the volume up for auction was found by Gurrey’s family among his personal belongings. It includes images of Duke Kahanamoku and other surfers of the time.

The auction will feature more than 60 vintage surfboards and memorabilia from the 1920s through the 1960s, and will include a live, online option for bidders from around the world.
