Safe and sound for Christmas: A shaggy haired Gerard Butler jets into Glasgow days after cheating death in surfing accident

His family must have been going out of their minds with worry after his near-fatal surfing accident a few days ago.

So Gerard Butler’s loved ones would have been even more pleased to see him when he jetted into his native Scotland, happy, healthy and ready for a lovely family Christmas.

The actor was snapped arriving at Glasgow airport on Christmas Eve looking very shaggy-haired but also very tanned having spent most of his days at the beach lately.

And he happily obliged the waiting cameras with a quick snap as he headed off to his car, wrapped up for the cold Scottish climes in a shiny black parka jacket with fur-trimmed hood.

Butler, 42, always spends Christmas with his friends and family in Scotland, and put his filming commitments on hold so he could fly across the world to be with them.

He is currently filming Of Men And Mavericks in California, a movie based on the life of US surfer Jay Moriarity, and plays Rick ‘Frosty’ Hesson, Moriarity’s mentor.

A week ago, the actor cheated death when being pinned under the water by powerful waves at a notoriously dangerous California surfing spot.

He was getting ready to film action scenes when he was thrown off his surfboard and pummelled by breakers at least 12 feet high and held underwater for two consecutive waves, before being hit on the head by four or five more when he managed to swim to the surface.

Eventually the 42-year-old was plucked from the water and on to a jet-ski, before being taken to the shore and rushed to hospital by ambulance.

The star was taken to the nearby Stanford Medical Centre and detained for observation overnight.

Gerard’s representative said: ‘He is totally fine, they held him for observation. But he has been cleared and he is OK.’
