A BRITISH man was fighting for his life tonight after a 13ft Great White shark bit off his leg when he ignored warnings to swim in South Africa today.
Michael Cohen, 42, who lives in Cape Town, had to have the OTHER leg amputated tonight after being mauled as he swam off the city’s resort of Fish Hoek.
The unmarried accountant had dived in at the closed beach, where he was a regular swimmer, despite repeated warnings after at least three sharks were seen in the water this morning. A lifeguard rushed over to warn him to get out, but was too late.
Fish Hoek is in the Great White hotspot of False Bay — watched over by a team of shark spotters. One of them, Monwabisi Sikweyiya, who helped rescue Mr Cohen, said: “He was a regular swimmer here. He was interested in sharks and respected them, but never took any notice of our warnings. If he wanted to swim, he swam. He always said, ‘If a shark takes me, blame me, not the shark’.”
Mr Sikweyiya used his shorts and belt as tourniquets on Mr Cohen’s legs — the right torn off above the knee and the left mauled — until paramedics arrived by helicopter.
The shark could be seen in the bay after the mauling and all local beaches remained closed.
Chief shark spotter Alison Kock said: “We have seen sharks in the bay repeatedly this week. They can come as close as 1m from the shore and there is a real risk to swimmers.”
