Shark bites surfer in Melbourne Beach: A man is recovering from a shark bite this morning. The 50-year-old was bitten on the left hand while surfing at Melbourne Beach.

A shark bit a surfer in the hand Sunday morning near Aquarina Beach and Country Club, Brevard County Fire Rescue Lt. Gary Windham said.The shark attack occurred just before 10 a.m. The surfer, a local man who was 49 or 50 years old, suffered “a significant bite to the left hand,” Windham said.“He almost lost four fingers,” he said.

The surfer walked across State Road A1A to Fire Station 65, where he was treated and transported by ambulance to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

The surfer declined media interview requests, and he was listed in good condition Sunday afternoon, said Jeni Hatter, Health First spokeswoman.

He left the hospital shortly before 5 p.m.
